When do I need to renew my Oregon CCB License?

Good news. You don't need to worry about renewing your Oregon CCB license every year. Instead, your license expires every two years after its original issue date. Take a look at your pocket or wall card it should list your expiration date.

About six weeks before your license is set to expire, you should receive a renewal notice in the mail from the CCB. Don't assume that if you don't get it, you don't need to renew. Your license will still expire on the listed date, whether or not you get that notice. (And don't forget that you need to take the required CE hours before you submit your renewal, too.)

To make sure you get your renewal notice promptly, keep your contact information up to date with the CCB. In fact, state law says that you have to notify the CCB of an address, phone, or email change within 10 days of the change.

You have a couple of options for updating your address with them. You can send in this Address or Business Name Change Request Form. Alternatively, you can head to the CCB's Online Services portal. Log in, then click on Business Activities. From there, select Edit Business Information and input your new address.

If you still don't get a renewal notice, call the CCB at (503) 378-4621.

How to get a suspended Oregon CCB license renewed

Your Oregon license could get suspended for a number of reasons (see page 10 of the CCB's Contractor's Resource Guide). Some of those reasons include:

  • You hired employees when your employer status was exempt
  • Your bond or liability insurance got canceled
  • You don't pay your renewal fee
  • You don't maintain your corporate/LLC filing with the Oregon Corporation Division

The good news is that getting your suspended Oregon CCB license renewed usually comes down to rectifying the reason for the suspension in the first place. For example, if you didn't pay your renewal fee and that led to a license suspension, paying your fee should be enough to qualify you for renewal and subsequent license reactivation.

What is the penalty for working without a contractor's license in Oregon?

Per state law ORS 701.021, you need a license to not just do contracting work but to even submit a bid for contracting work.

Penalties for violating that law are fairly steep. Chapter 812 of state law lays out the following penalties:

  • If you advertise as a contractor or submit a bid without a license, you can be assessed a penalty of $600.
  • If you advertise as a contractor or submit a bid with a lapsed or inactive license, your penalty could be $700.
  • If you do contracting work without a license but it's your first time doing this work and you don't cause any damage to the property, the penalty is $1,000.
  • If you cause damages for unlicensed contracting work, the penalty is $5,000.
  • If you do contracting work with a lapsed or invalid license or it's not your first time getting caught doing unlicensed work, you'll pay a $5,000 penalty.

Chapter 812 continues on to outline a bevy of other penalties you could face for not complying with CCB regulation. Ultimately, to protect yourself (and your wallet), it's in your best interest to make sure you always have a valid Oregon CCB license.
